Men of my age grew up with images of Valerie Singleton on an elephant in a far off world called Ceylon. Now of course we have to remember that it is Sri Lanka, same place, different name.
Sri Lankan curries are tasty but not necessarily hot! They are light, delicately spicy with an abundance of fresh herbs and a dash of fresh coconut – tantalising to the palette. I recommend the seer fish (bit like tuna) especially if you don't fancy anything too hot. If you're hardcore then the staff are happy to crank the spice levels up to max.
Dessert was an eggy custard that was made with coconut milk and sweetened with Sri Lankan treacle, then baked. It was wonderful.
That night I fell asleep dreaming of coconut pudding and Valerie Singleton.
